September 27, 2018 – The Perth Mint holds the record for the heaviest coin in the world. In 2011, the mint produced a coin weighing 1,012 kilograms (2,231 pounds) in .9999 gold with a diameter of 80 cm. It thus surpassed the Royal Canadian Mint which had held the record up until that point with the maple leaf bullion coin of a weight of 100 kilograms. The record was officially added to the Guinness World Records in 2012.
The heaviest coin in the world cast from more than a ton of pure gold. Its value of raw material amounted to exactly 33,228,863.87 euros (=39,119,583.12 USD) on September 25, 2018. At this value, it may well also qualify for the record of the most expensive coin in the world.
The gold for this coin was extracted from Australian mines and later cast into a specifically designed mold. The spectacular coin is exhibited at the Perth Mint and amazes visitors from all over the world. It is part of the Gold Exhibition that also presents other innovative products made by the Perth Mint.
