The Deák tér Lutheran Church of Budapest

June 16, 2011 – The Magyar Nemzeti Bank is issuing a silver collector coin commemorating the 200th anniversary of the consecration of the Lutheran Church of Deák tér in Budapest. It is the fourth coin of the series “Masterpieces of the Hungarian ecclesiastical architecture”.

Hungary – 5000 HUF – 925 Ag – 38.61 mm – 31.46 g – Design: Emma Sz. Egyed – Mintage: 3,000 (BU) and 5,000 (Proof).

The special flower-like shape is the distinguishing feature of this series. Previous issues are: The Esztergom Basilica (2006), The Great Reformed Church of Debrecen (2007), The Dohány street Synagogue of Budapest (2009).
The front of the new coin depicts the altar, which was completed for the consecration in 1811, the reverse shows the façade of the church. The building is part of the Insula Lutherana – the Lutheran island; this is the name of an ensemble of buildings in the heart of Pest, consisting of a Lutheran elementary and secondary school, the church, and quarters for the pastors and cantors.
