His stage persona of The Tramp was a display of contradiction – baggy pants and a tight coat, a small hat and large shoes, a bowler hat and bamboo cane, and a small moustache to add age but not hide his expressions.

In 2014, there are many reasons to celebrate cinema’s most iconic gentleman. It is the 100th anniversary since Charlie Chaplin appeared in his first film, it is the 100th anniversary of the Tramp making his screen debut, and it is also the 125th anniversary of the artist’s birth.

To commemorate this legend of the silent screen, the Perth Mint has released a 1oz silver proof lenticular coin, issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu. The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the 2014 Charlie Chaplin – 100 Years of Laughter 1oz silver proof lenticular coins.

Design
With the use of lenticular lenses, the reverse of the coin depicts Charlie Chaplin’s onscreen character, The Tramp, jauntily walking as depicted in the closing scenes of the 1928 silent movie, “The Circus”. The imagery is bordered by the inscription “Charlie Chaplin”, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark also appears in the design.

The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2014 year-date are shown on the coin’s obverse.
