August 26th, 2010 – Since end of July the redesigned coin cabinet of the Swiss National Museums has been reopened. It was closed during the renovation of the impressive building near Zurich main station.

The museum’s numismatic cabinet houses some 100,000 objects, including bank notes, securities, credit cards and dies in addition to coins and medals. Its timeline runs from Celtic coinage to currently valid tender, both metal and paper. The museum is the only institution that systematically collects coins from all across Switzerland. With roughly 30,000 pieces, its collection of Swiss coins is probably the largest of its kind in the world.

It’s just a small part of the collection, which will be on display at the new exhibition. The artistic coins and medals can be studied in detail by the help of computer screens showing enlargements.
