July 26, 2018 – Italy issued a circulation coin set with a new 2 euro commemorative coin dedicated to the Ministry of Health which was established 60 years ago.
The set comprises all euro denominations and Italy’s new 2 euro commemorative coin on the establishment of the Ministry of Health in 1958.
“The Republic safeguards health as a fundamental right of the individual and as a collective interest”, as article 32 of the Italian Constitution reads, thus underlining the importance of the protection of health as an inalienable human right and a universal good.
In 1958 the Ministero della Sanità was established – in 2001 renamed as “Ministero della Salute” – to ensure full implementation of this constitutional provision, while the attainment of its goals were entrusted to the “Servizio Sanitario Nazionale” (National Health Service), which was founded in 1978.
The national side of the 2 euro coin shows the allegory of health and symbols representing the Ministry’s activities.
The national side shows the allegory of health with symbol elements of the Ministry’s activities: Environment, Research, Food and Medicine; on the left, the monogram “RI”, acronym of the Italian Republic; above, “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome; at the base of the feminine figure, initials of the designer Silvia Petrassi; around, the inscription “MINISTERO DELLA SALUTE”, the years “1958-2018” and the twelve stars of the European Union.
The set is issued with a mintage of 10,000 pieces in SU and 5,000 pieces in proof.
