Citizens vote for Euro coin design

June 4, 2015 – During the second half of 2015 the member states of the Euro zone will issue a 2 euro commemorative coin with a with a common design on the national side. The particular detail: the citizens have voted for the design. The new coin is issued thirty years after the European Council had introduced the European flag as official symbol in June 1985.
All mints of the Euro member states could submit designs for the new coin. A commission of experts chose five designs without giving details on the designer or country of origin. All Euro area citizens and / or residents over 12 years were called to vote over these five designs. More than 100,000 people have participated.

The winning design comes from Greece was announced on the website www.coin-competition.eu.

On May 28 the winner was announced: the design by George Stamatopoulos (Bank of Greece).
