July 22nd, 2010 – The cooperation between English archaeologists and the ones searching with detectors has proven to be successful once again. One of the latter found and reported one the biggest hoards found in Britain ever. Buried in a big jug approximately 30 cm underground were 52,000 antoniniani from the 3rd century A. D. with a total weight of 16 kilograms. These coins’ value may well be equivalent to a legionary’s salary of four years. The found was made in late April; the experts of the Portable Antiquity Scheme took care of it since. They consider the hoard a ritual offer to the gods.
