September 21, 2017 – Luther changed the Holy Roman Empire more than anybody else. He was able to do so, as his theses matched the needs of an era. The Reformation enabled the German princes to win their independence from the emperor and the church without risking their personal religion. The Peace of Westphalia brought not only the end of a religious war, but the end of a process historians are calling today “territorialization”.
