Top Prices for Ancient Coins at Nomos Auction 10

Nomos Auction 10 began the series of Spring sales of ancient coins held in Zurich with quite a resounding bang. The room was filled with active, enthusiastic bidders, the atmosphere was buoyant, and prices were often very strong.

11: Syracuse. Gelon I, 485-478 BC. Tetradrachm, c. 485-483. Boehringer 45. Rizzo pl. XXXIV, 10 and 22. Very rare. Extremely fine. Estimate: 75,000 CHF. Hammer price: 85,000 CHF.

The splendid Syracusan tetradrachm, lot 11 (estimated at 75,000) came from LHS 102 where it sold for 58,000 over an estimate of 18,000: it now went for 85,000. Lot 12, a wonderful dekadrachm signed by Kimon without any of the usual die rust, made 270,000.

A real surprise came with lot 23, a fine tetradrachm of Philip II: estimated at 3,000 it soared up to 22,000 with many bidders participating on this splendid coin!

The finest known Megalopolis stater (lot 44) from the famed BCD collection made 220,000. Lot 48, a tiny but wonderful hekte from Phokaia (48) previously in the Kunstfreund collection, made 9,500 against a 2,800 estimate. A very rare gold double daric (58) made 38,000 against a 30,000 estimate.

A lovely Carinus aureus (129) conservatively estimated at 10,000 ended selling for 29,000 and the extremely rare gold multiple of Constans (133) doubled its estimate of 35,000 to sell for 70,000.
