Auction 335: Ancient Art
Hirsch presents ancient works of art
German auction house Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger in Munich will start the year 2018 with an auction sale of antiquities on February 6th. This collection consists of more than 800 rare works of art produced in a wide variety of epochs, places, and art styles.
Lot 49: Woman’s head capite velato. Light marble. Roman, 1.-3. century A.D., H. 27.3 cm. Estimated at 15.000 Euros.
The first item of note going under the hammer is a roman marble head, presumably of the goddess Juno or Pietas, dating from the 1st to 3rd century AD, estimated at 15.000 Euros.
Lot 155: Red figured Askos by a Baltimore Painter, Apulia, last quarter of the 4th century B.C., H. 22.3 cm, Estimated at 3.000 Euros.
The titular piece of the auction is a magnificent Askos, painted by the Baltimore painter in Apulia during the last quarter of the 4th century B.C. The Askos depicts the love god Eros seated upon a rock and is estimated at 3.000 Euros. Among the metal objects is a life sized Buddha statue crafted in gilded bronze in Siam during the 19th century (3.500 Euros).
Yet another true highlight of the auction is a bronze oil lamp, whose handle was designed in the form of a theatrical mask. This piece from the 1st to 2nd century Roman times will go under the hammer at 12.000 Euros. Among the Fibula we find a beautiful specimen from Navicella made from gold plating during the Etruscan era, valued at 2.500 Euros. A Hellenistic rosette diadem with beautiful decoration will go under the hammer at 7.000 Euros.
