June 21, 2018 – Founded by King Alfonso IX of Leon in 1218, the University of Salamanca is the oldest university in Spain and one of the longest-standing educational centres in the world. Spain commemorates the university’s 800th birthday with a collector coin in silver minted by the Royal Spanish Mint.
Spain / 10 euros / .925 silver / 40mm / 27g / Mintage: 6,000.
The reverse side shows an image of the plateresque façade of the University of Salamanca building. On the left, in two lines and in capital letters, the face value 10 EURO. On the right, in two lines, the years 1218 and 2018; below, the Mintmark. On the upper part of the coin, the legend UNIVERSIDAD DE SALAMANCA, with the corporate typography of this university centre.
The obverse side depicts a portrait of His Majesty King Felipe VI, wearing the insignia of Captain General. In the upper part, in a circular direction and in capital letters, the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA. At the bottom, between two points, the year of issue: 2018. The motifs and legends are surrounded by a pearl graph.
