February 22, 2018 – The Royal Mint’s Bullion division launched a new ‘first’ – the introduction of its classic Britannia One Ounce coin struck in platinum. The move will allow those wishing to invest in Royal Mint Bullion even greater choice when diversifying their portfolio.

For 2,000 years Britannia has personified a nation. A symbol of strength and progress, she’s a reassuringly familiar presence – a constant through change, standing watch at the edge of the shoreline. Coins bearing her image symbolise the heritage of British minting to investors around the world.

The introduction of the platinum Britannia follows last year’s successful launch of The Royal Mint’s first platinum bullion products and forms part of its growing partnership with the World Platinum Investment Council.

Director of Bullion for The Royal Mint, Chris Howard, said: “I am delighted to announce the introduction of Britannia platinum coins to our world-respected line-up of bullion coins. This marks an historic moment in The Royal Mint’s Britannia Bullion story, and provides a fantastic opportunity for us to widen our offering to bullion investors still further.”

David Crawford, Program Manager at the World Platinum Investment Council, said: “The launch of The Royal Mint platinum Britannia is further proof of platinum’s unique properties as an attractive investment asset. The Britannia is amongst the world’s most recognisable bullion coin ranges and we’re delighted The Royal Mint is expanding the Britannia range to include platinum for the first time.”

The coin has been struck in one ounce of 999.5 platinum and has been minted to bullion standard. It is Capital Gains Tax exempt (UK) and carries the UK Government assurance of weight and purity. An addition for 2018 is the textured ‘guilloche’ finish that appears on the obverse of the coin, surrounding the portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Jody Clark.

A lot of mints have added platinum to their bullion portfolio. The Austrian Mint did so in 2016. Here is an article.

The Perth Mint was even faster. They have been offering Platinum Bullion coins since 2013. Here’s the article.

And if you really want to laugh, here is an article of the same year talking about the question how a Platinum Bullion Eagle once was thought to be the salvation of US finance. Björn Schöpe wrote this article in January 2013.

You need reasons why you should invest in Platinum, here a dealership has thought about three of them.
