September 5, 2013 – The Association of Swiss Professional Numismatists – that is the association of Switzerland’s coin dealers – is pleased to welcome Swissmint as a new member.
The Federal Mint Swissmint is an independent unit of the Swiss Department of Finances and presently employs 20 persons. Its beginnings reach back to 1848 and the establishment of the Swiss Confederation when coinage rights passed from the cantons to the central government. In this time the Swiss Franc was definitely introduced, a currency that is counted among the hardest in the world. Since then Swissmint supplies our country with the needed “small change” that, in spite of electronic means of payment, has maintained itself as a simple and expedient means of payment..
Business manager of Swissmint is Mr. Marius Haldimann.
Swissmint produces and sells the new Swiss commemorative coins in gold, silver and bi-metal, as well as the yearly coin sets. It also makes out expertises for Swiss coins after 1850. Swissmint maintains a very interesting website www.swissmint.ch with much information for collectors, dealers and the general public. It contains themes such as production of coinage, new commemorative coins, coin dealing, history of Swissmint, etc.
