September 20, 2012 – The General Council of the Riksbank has decided how Sweden’s new coins will look. Ernst Nordin’s proposal ”Sun, wind and water” will form the artistic basis for the design.

Sweden’s new 1-, 2- and 5-kron coins.

Three of Sweden’s coins, that is the 1-, 2-, and 5-krona coins, will have a new design in October 2016. The new coins will be smaller and lighter. This will reduce transport and purchasing costs as well as environmental impact in connection with manufacture and cash management. The 10-krona coin will have the same design as today.

The General Council of the Riksbank chose between 5 different proposals and has decided that Ernst Nordin’s proposal ”Sun, wind and water” will form the artistic basis for the new coins. Ernst Nordin is a sculptor.
”Ernst Nordin’s proposal is of high artistic quality. It is a beautiful and userfriendly coin series with a fine balance between innovation and Swedish coin tradition,” says Peter Egardt, member of the General Council and chairman of the General Council’s drafting committee for banknote and coin issues.

All of the proposed coin designs will be on display at the Royal Coin Cabinet during the autumn.

The introduction of Sweden’s new banknotes and coins will begin in 2015. First will come the new 20-, 50-, 200- and 1,000-krona banknotes, which will be released in October 2015. A year later, these will be followed by the new 100- and 500-krona banknotes and the 1-, 2- and 5-krona coins.

You can learn virtually everything about the new coins on the website of the Riksbank.
