January 31, 2013 – And it happened again. The record price of the most expensive coin at auction has been beaten. The US auction house Stack’s Bowers Galleries sold a 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar for a whopping $10,016,875 (incl. buyer’s premium) during its Americana Sale on January 24, 2013.
An ardent bidding had arisen because this coins represents arguably the best specimen known. It is, indeed, graded Specimen-66 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC). Possibly that coin is the very first struck in 1794, the year when American silver dollars were issued for the first time.
Stack’s Bowers, then in cooperation with Sotheby’s, had already reached the previous record price for a coin. In 2002 the firm sold a 1933 Double Eagle for the impressive sum of $7,590,020. Now let’s see if it will be again Stack’s Bowers to surpass their own record and if the next record coin will be again an American dollar.
