February 6, 2014 – Doctor Who fans, keep your eyes open: The Daleks are on their way to Earth. But you won’t need the Time Lords to protect you from these alien visitors.
In 2014, New Zealand Mint is releasing the newest coins in its popular Doctor Who series. A limited number of 5,000 Dalek collectable coins are on sale on the NZ Mint web site since 4 February. They will be closely followed by the Weeping Angels, the Cybermen, the Silurians and the Sontarans.

The Daleks, the legendary villains of the celebrated television series, are the latest release in NZ Mint’s Doctor Who-themed coin series. It follows the success of NZ Mint’s Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Gold and Silver coins and the 11 Doctors set in 2013.

Niue / 1$ / 1/2oz 999 silver / 32mm / Mintage: 5,000.

Produced in collaboration with BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand to celebrate the world’s longest running sci-fi TV show, the half-ounce silver coin is the legal tender of Niue and features an engraved image of the Doctor Who nemeses. It is set against a coloured background, within a finely engraved border.

New Zealand Mint Chief Executive, Simon Harding, encourages collectors to be quick if they want to get their hands on one of the limited edition coins.
“We have a significant number of pre-orders from Doctor Who fans the world over already, who were given a chance to vote for which Doctor Who Monsters were included in the coin series.”
Brigid Roberts, BBC Worldwide ANZ’s Senior Licensing Executive, Consumer Products, adds, “We’re thrilled that the iconic Doctor Who Monsters, who have played a key part in one of the most successful television series of all time, have been brought back to life in this way.”

The Daleks first appeared on Doctor Who in 1963 when the time travelling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor encountered the robot race on the radiation-soaked planet of Skaro, waging war with the peaceful Thals. Pursuing the Doctor across space and time, the Daleks invaded Earth, developed the Reality Bomb and tried to imprison the Doctor in the Pandorica. They fought the Time Lords in The Last Great Time War – a conflict so powerful and destructive that the universe was said to convulse.
The fearsome and merciless creatures featured regularly on the original Doctor Who from 1963 until 1989, and returned when the show was revived in 2005.
