Las Vegas Club Show a Success

June 5, 2014 – The 51st Annual Las Vegas Numismatic Society Coin Show held April 4-6 attracted 3044 attendees and approximately 300 dealers to a sold out bourse floor. Public attendance was slightly down from last spring, but business was reported brisk by most exhibitors and visiting dealers and appeared steady through Sunday. Pre-registered conventioneers came from as far away as France, Australia and Canada.

The Saturday Boy Scout merit badge workshop enjoyed a fantastic increase in participation of 77 scouts, up significantly from last year. It was taught by Patti Finner, former American Numismatic Association vice president. Over 25 parents and troop leaders attended. After the workshop scouts converged upon the show to practice what they learned. Walter Ostromecki, current American Numismatic Association president continued the learning curve and engaged the youth in a daylong Treasure Hunt.

Dollar collectors benefitted from the Silver Dollar seminar spearheaded by John Highfill, founder of the National Silver Dollar Roundtable. Other presenters were authors and experts C Logan McKechnie, VAMView Annual Price Guide, Jeff Oxman, Carson City Morgan Dollars: Coins of the GSA Hoard and Mark Witkower, Official Guide to the 1878 Reverse of ‘79 Varieties. Rodney Winks of Las Vegas, Nevada won the seminar raffle and received a copy of The Comprehensive US Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, by John Highfill. The seminar drew 34 attendees, down from last year’s number of 73.

The Nevada Civil War Association appeared in period dress all three days, and presented historical exhibits at the entrance to the show.

Tremendous volunteerism by over 25 club members was observed in many aspects of the show operations and set-up. The Las Vegas Numismatic Society is a very active club and recently passed the 200 member mark. The club provides scholarships for Nevadan collegiate and numismatic education to the Las Vegas community.

Club member, Donald Cleland was presented with the President’s Award at the show by Walter Ostromecki, American Numismatic Association president, for his efforts in promoting young numismatist programs for the Las Vegas Numismatic Society.
