August 23, 2012 – Financial history researcher Lawrence Schuffman will be the keynote speaker during the educational programs to be held in conjunction with the Professional Currency Dealers Association’s November 8-11 National Coin and Currency Convention, to be held at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare, located at 5440 North River Road, in Rosemont, a northwest Chicago suburb one mile from O’Hare Airport.
Patricia Foley, General Chairman of the convention, now in its 27th year, said of Schuffman’s talk. “Lawrence Schuffman’s topic will be ‘World War I Liberty Loan Bonds, their Genesis, History and Contemporary Marketing.’ His program will be presented at 3PM on Friday, November 9. Mr. Schuffman has been an avid researcher on the general theme of his presentation and his original research in archival sources periodically uncovers fresh information that he shares with the numismatic community. He is currently engaged in writing a book on his specialty field, a project that when completed will exponentially increase the knowledge base of the overall numismatic community relative to this historically important field. Liberty Loan bonds were an important source of financing for our defense efforts during World War I. Mr. Schuffman’s talks bring this field alive in an immediate and gripping way and send his attendees home thirsting for more knowledge and encouraged to do their own reading and research.”
Foley continued, “Our event was formerly known as the National and World Paper Money Convention. As the membership of the PCDA has grown, more and more of our newer members also regard coins, in addition to our traditional paper money interest base, as an important aspect of their numismatic activities. The widened scope of our bourse offerings, which include essentially everything numismatic, U.S., foreign and ancient coins, as well as U.S. and world paper money, reflect this broadened base of our membership and the new name for our convention.”
Foley added, “As of mid-July we have only two booths remaining available in our bourse area. Dealers interested in participating as booth holders with us in November should e-mail me and I’ll send them an application.”
Lyn Knight will be the official auctioneer for the National Coin and Currency Convention, holding a three session sale on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. Auction lot viewing will open at 10AM on Wednesday, November 7.
